Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

Back in 1988, GONH had a candidate's forum prior to the NH Primary. I went to help out the president of GONH, and it turned out he didn't need me, so I got my other stuff out and joined the Bush cheering section. The participants were all Republicans (Democrats were invited, but didn't appear...) and there was a lot of enthusiasm, with each faction trying to out cheer the other, and it was pretty much all good natured. When then VP George H W Bush delivered his opening remarks, he noted some people in the audience, including none other than Chuck Yeager. The whole place went to its feet, including the other candidates, and the cheering and applause just brought down the house. I looked over, and there he was, with that kind of shucks and geewilickers grin you'd see him with. Golly, that was just one of the coolest things ever. I didn't even try to get through the crowd to shake his hand later. Bush orchestrated that one well !
